Everything is absolutely perfect, from Exedore’s hip-swinging to his horrible, delightful, singing. Normally I try to see it others’ way, but I can’t imagine why some fans find Exedore’s singing sequence horrifying. It took me a while before I could listen to Minmei breaking out “Stage Fright” without snickering before reaching for the mute button (obviously in some ways I’m still a typical Robotech fan). I like Rico, Bron, and Konda, but really, they’re just vehicles for comic relief. The culture-clash-comedy was done with Rico, Bron, and Konda, but Exedore has an already-established personality for it to contrast with, and so it’s a lot funnier. It’s just so damn funny to see Exedore, normally so stiff and expository, acting this way. It’s not unfamiliar territory for the character, given Exedore’s flustered reaction to Khyron in “Bye-Bye Mars”, but it was never shown on a scale like this before. The most obvious additions “The Messenger” made to Exedore’s character are his comical moments, including the infamous Exedance. “The Messenger” (Robotech Remastered Edition)

And for a “bonus”, a review of Comico’s crappy comics rendition of the same episode. Each version of the episode is pretty much the same, but most of what I have to say on it goes to the Robotech version, which is what I saw first. It’s also my favourite episode of the original Macross series. yeah, I was pretty much doomed from that point on.

It was also the first time something from the series stayed with me after the DVR recording was done.

The episode’s story added a new dimension to him and put Exedore on the fast track to becoming one of my most favourites. While I’d been a fan of Exedore almost from the start of Robotech, it was “The Messenger” which gave my interest the boost it needed.
